Tips for Farmers Market with Your Dog
Farmers markets are filled with all kinds of delicious produce, yummy artisan goods and even freshly baked dessert items. Nothing is more fun than perusing the market on a breezy weekend day, especially if your furry best friend is with you. Not only are farmers markets fun for you, they can be really enjoyable for your pup too, provided you use some manners when you’re there. Read on to discover how to have the best time at the market with your dog.
1. Be Sure the Market Allows Dogs
Many farmers markets allow dogs to accompany their pet parents, but unfortunately, some don’t. Check the website for the market you want to visit to ensure it’s OK to bring your furry friend along and to see if she’s restricted to certain areas or specific times. You can also call the organizer of the market with these questions.
2. Keep Your Pup Leashed
It’s only polite to keep your pup on a leash while you’re strolling along in the market. Plus, it’ll prevent her from running off after all the great smells. Most farmers markets actually require pups to be on a leash of no more than four-to-six feet in length, so be sure to check with your local market about this.
3. Brush Up on Your Pooch’s Manners
Review the basic commands like “Sit,” “Stay,” “Leave-it” and “Down” with your furry buddy prior to heading out to the market. This will keep her on her best behavior, preventing her from jumping on strangers or even snatching some delicious-looking veggies or other tasty treats at the market.
4. Test Out Her Favorites
Many veggies and fruits are great additions to your pup’s diet, and they’re in abundance at farmers markets. First, check with your veterinarian to find out which fruits and veggies are safe for your dog to eat. Then, discover her favorites through a “taste test” at home. Finally, you’ll be ready to stock up on what’s in season while you’re at the farmers market. Once you purchase the treats, you can even share some with her while shopping. Just be sure to stick to your vet’s recommended serving sizes—it’s still possible to overdo it, even on fruits and veggies!
5. Clean Up After Your Buddy
It should go without saying, but be sure to stock up on potty bags to stuff in your purse or pockets. Have them handy and use them to clean up after your best buddy as needed.
6. Bring a Yummy Snack
With all those fresh and delicious smells wafting around the market, your pup will appreciate you bringing a tasty snack for her to enjoy while you sample goods from market vendors. This will keep her well-behaved and content. Bring along a single serving of your dog’s favorite Nature’s Recipe® wet dog food. Our cups are easy to peel open and serve straight from the container, and you can easily dispose of it in a proper receptacle when she’s finished. It could be a great moment to rest and enjoy the market’s outdoor seating area if one is available!
